Bev Pettersen

Bev Pettersen (3)

Welcome Bev!

Bev Pettersen is a three-time nominee in the National Readers Choice Award as well as a two-time finalist in the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart® Contest. She competed for five years on the Alberta Thoroughbred race circuit and is an Equine Canada certified coach. She lives in Nova Scotia with her family, and when she's not writing novels, she's riding.

Please introduce us to you and your body of work.

My first romantic mystery, Jockey and Jewels, finaled in RWA’s Golden Heart and that recognition spurred me on to write seven more award-winning novels. In between, I’ve written a thriller novella, Repent, for T. R. Ragan’s Lizzy Gardner Kindle World.

How did you come to be involved in the SRKW? How do you know Emily?

I was honored when Emily invited me to participate in the launch of her new Kindle World. Sydney Rye is a strong kickass protagonist and it was fun to step into the world of vigilante justice where anything goes. It’s a great World to write in, as there are so many options for the backgrounds and characters. And when an author is having fun, usually the reader is too!

What genre do you write in? Why do you enjoy that genre?

Romantic mysteries with an animal or two are my favorite. The combination of mystery and romance keeps me interested in a book–whether it’s reading or writing them. And animals are notoriously unpredictable, just like that spark of attraction that can flare up between people and then go horribly wrong. Setting mysteries against a horse or dog background gives more color to my books and keeps me motivated to write.

Which character or characters do you plan to focus on in your Sydney Rye Kindle World contribution? What drew you to that character?

Blue was the big draw. I once had a dog with the same name and personality, and still miss him. He was multi-colored, part blue heeler and shepherd with the same character traits as Sydney’s Blue. So this was a chance to write in a crime world where he was prominently featured.

Will your contribution to the world include one of your own characters? Please introduce us to them and your own world.

In my Sydney Rye novella, Strange Behavior, Sydney and Blue end up at a California racetrack helping an abused groom who is running for her life. Sydney doesn’t know much about horses and cares even less about rules. She immediately butts heads with Rick Talbot, who is the bad boy biker from my romantic mystery novel, Backstretch Baby. He has his own method of solving problems and opposes her unique brand of justice.

Is there anything else you’d like Emily’s readers to know?

Congratulations to Emily on her exciting new Kindle World and also to you wonderful and supportive readers who made Sydney Rye such an international force!

REPENTcover

Sacramento Police aren't very concerned when fourteen-year-old Billy Tanner fails to show up for community service. Tossing a firebomb at a police horse isn't something they can easily forgive. But when the boy's grandmother convinces private investigator, Lizzy Gardner, to search for her missing grandson, Lizzy discovers that some animal lovers will go to chilling lengths to obtain true repentance.

Meet the Kindle World Authors-Renee Pawlish

SRKW (3)

Hello, all! The countdown continues to the launch of the Sydney Rye Kindle World and this week we've got another of the wonderful launch authors to introduce to you.

And don't forget to sign up for the Sydney Rye Kindle World Readers Group to receive 8 free book from these talented authors. Now without further ado, please meet…

Renee Pawlish

bio cropped

Welcome Renee!

Renée Pawlish is the award-winning author of the bestselling Reed Ferguson mystery series, horror bestseller Nephilim Genesis of Evil, The Noah Winters YA Adventure series, middle-grade historical novel This War We're In, Take Five, a short story collection, and The Sallie House: Exposing the Beast Within, a nonfiction account of a haunted house investigation.

Renée has been called “a promising new voice to the comic murder mystery genre” and “a powerful storyteller”. Nephilim Genesis of Evil has been compared to Stephen King and Frank Peretti.

Renée was born in California, but has lived most of her life in Colorado

Please introduce us to you and your body of work.

I am the author of the Reed Ferguson mystery series, the Noah Winder adventure series for young adults, Nephilim, a supernatural mystery/horror novel that will be a trilogy (if I ever get around to writing the other two), and other stories. I’ve been writing since I was a kid, and I don’t think I could ever stop – I have too many ideas in my head and not enough time to write them all. Right now, I split my time between a day job as a business data analyst and author on nights and weekends. It keeps life busy, but fun. When I’m not doing either of those, I love to hike and ride my bike, play guitar or chase ballplayers for autographs.

How did you come to be involved in the Sydney Rye Kindle World? How do you know Emily?

Emily and I first met when I coordinated a box set of mystery novels, and we’ve corresponded ever since. She asked me to be a part of the SRKW and I couldn’t say no. I felt like it would be a good challenge to take two completely different characters (Reed Ferguson and Sydney Rye) and put them in one story.

What genre do you write in? Why do you enjoy that genre?

I generally write mysteries because those are what I most like to read. I like the whodunit aspect, and that the mystery is the central piece of the story. I also like series because you get to see a character develop over time. You’re invited into the story to look for the answers to that mystery, and you keep reading so you can figure out the puzzle.

Which character or characters do you plan to focus on in your Sydney Rye Kindle World contribution? What drew you to that character?

I focused on Sydney and Blue. When I read the series, Sydney is the most compelling character, and she is so different from the characters in my series. I thought for a long time on how I could set her in Reed’s world and see if she and Reed could work together, and at the same time, stay true to their own personalities and motivations. And of course, Blue has to be in the novella. Who doesn’t love a loyal dog?

Will your contribution to the world include one of your own characters? Please introduce us to them and your own world.

I set this story in Reed Ferguson’s world in Denver, Colorado, and readers will be introduced to him and his cast of quirky friends. Reed is a self-deprecating detective who loves film noir and detective fiction, and he wants more than anything to be like his hero, Humphrey Bogart – although Reed’s too nice a guy to ever really be like Bogie. Reed always manages to get himself into some kind of trouble, but through his smarts and wit, he gets the job done. He is engaged to Willie, his ever-patient fiancée, who sometimes lends a helping hand, along with Cal, Reed’s computer-geek sidekick and best friend, and Ace and Deuce, Reed’s not-so-bright but loyal neighbors. Many describe the series as lighthearted noir.

Is there anything else you’d like Emily’s readers to know?

I hope readers enjoy the blend of Reed and Sydney’s worlds.

TDHITM_Apr2015

A wannabe private eye with a love of film noir and detective fiction.
A rich, attractive femme fatale.
A missing husband.
A rollicking ride to a dark and daring ending.

Reed Ferguson’s first case is a daring adventure, complete with a dose of film noir, and a lot of humor. With a great supporting cast of the Goofball Brothers, Reed’s not too bright neighbors, and Cal, Reed’s computer geek friend, This Doesn’t Happen In The Movies is detective noir at its best. Follow Reed as he solves crime akin to his cinematic hero, Humphrey Bogart.

Great for fans who love a fast-paced, humorous read, without a lot of swearing or sex.

We saw the brake lights glow up ahead and Loki slowed to a stop. The vans pulled off onto the side of the road. We waited, our engine running. The vans were about a hundred feet ahead of us, far enough away that there was no way they could see our unlit car in the dark but close enough that we could see figures climbing out of the lead van. The headlights from the rear vehicle lit the prisoners and guards clearly for a moment as they passed through the bright beams, headed toward the rice paddy.
“Why two vans?” I asked.
“That's what makes me think this is not just a simple execution,” Loki said.
“What is it then?”
“Something we need to stop.”
He turned off the car and grabbed a rifle out of the back seat, passing it to me before reaching for another. Loki made sure the dome light was set to “off” before opening his door and stepping out into the night. I followed him, opening the back door for Blue, who fell in line with my hip as I hurried to catch up with Loki. In the distance I could see the prisoners and guards were about 15 feet from the vans, still partly illuminated by the headlights. The prisoners were forced onto their knees.
Loki picked up his pace, breaking into a steady jog. I ran alongside him, our rifles held up in front of our chests. We watched as one of the prisoners was pulled away from the others. They blindfolded him. I could see his hands, chains winding off of them, clasped in front of his chest, in a position of prayer or begging. I guessed that he was doing both.
A guard knocked his hands down, exposing his chest. The other two prisoners were huddled together, the two remaining guards standing over them, guns aimed at their heads.

The blindfolded man, his chest exposed, could not see the guard raise his gun. The shot rang out loud in the flat space. The prisoner fell back, his head hitting the ground, his body seeming to disappear into darkness. The guard who shot him and another one picked his body up and began to drag it toward the second van. The back doors opened and we had a clear picture of the interior. There were bright lights that poured out into the night.

Sydney Rye Meet Russell Blake’s Jet

2

I was over the moon when I was asked to contribute to best-selling author Russell Blake's brand new JET Kindle World. For those of you not familiar with Kindle Worlds, it's a way for people to add stories to the series they love. And for those of you not familiar with Russell Blake's JET series here is his description:

The JET series chronicles the adventures of Maya, code name Jet, the Mossad’s deadliest operative, who fakes her own death to escape her operational life. But the past doesn’t forgive, nor do her enemies. Described as Jack Reacher meets Bond but with a female protagonist, the JET series is a bestselling series by a NY Times and USA Today bestselling author.

One of the awesome things about the JET World is that I was able to bring Sydney Rye and Blue into it. So I did a mash up between these two kick ass female characters. I hope you all enjoy my Sydney Rye and JET Adventure.

It Takes Two

Jet_Sydney Rye

Two women trained to kill, both will stop at nothing to get the job done.

Hoping to finally make a normal life for herself, Sydney Rye is trying her best to settle into her role as mission leader, but taking orders and playing by the rules has never been her strong suit.

Along with her partner, a wolf dog named Blue, Sydney has been assign to head a security team protecting a rich oil man from Texas while he and his family vacation in the Peruvian jungle. But she wasn't expecting to come up against her most formidable opponent to date.

Jet, still reeling from a personal discovery that will change everything she ever believed about herself, is under orders to kill the man Sydney is trying to protect. If she is to have any hope of a life beyond the Mossad, she knows she has to find the strength and focus to complete her mission, to fake normalcy in her own life for those who are watching.

Pitted against one another Jet and Sydney face off in battle after battle, spreading blood and carnage as they travel the globe. Through it all they find an admiration and respect for each other's skills.

But will it be enough? Could two such powerful women fighting on opposite sides, team up to save the innocent lives from a man so ruthless and powerful that he has evaded capture for years?

Want more? Here's an excerpt:

Condensation from the leaves left wet trails through the dog's long fur. A mutt, the son of two mutts, born on the streets of Brooklyn, Blue was an exception to his lineage. His parents never had good homes. Their coats were matted and their deaths early. The height of a Great Dane with the long snout of a collie and warm fur of a wolf, Blue didn't belong in this hot and humid environment. But he did not feel out of place. When following his master, Sydney Rye, Blue always felt right at home.
The woman who led Blue through the hot jungle was of average height with a body made hard by hours of exercise and hard-won discipline. Scars, one above and one below her left eye, were still bright pink after more than a year of healing. They followed a path worn through the thick vegetation by animals. Sydney hacked at the larger limbs of trees that encroached on the space. The scent of sap spilling into the air around them, hanging in the thick humidity. The buzz of bugs rose and fell, like the persistent waves of the ocean. The dirt under their feet was damp, sticking to Blue's paws and filling the treads of Sydney's hiking boots.
A low growl from Blue stopped Sydney, her arm raised above her head, the blade of the hatchet ready to descend onto a vine that crossed their path. A drop of sweat trickled from her hairline, curved around her ear, and slid down her neck, absorbing into the green T-shirt she wore. Sydney looked down at Blue. His ears were perked to the left as he stared up at her with his one blue eye and one brown. Sydney listened, closing her eyes to better hear. Footsteps, human.
Sydney lowered the hatchet, silently replacing it into the holster on her hip before removing her pistol, a SIG Sauer P226, standard issue for her agency. This was to be expected. Others out in this jungle. Different sides of the same coin. Sydney was here to protect, and the people out there were trying to kill. The man that Sydney was working to keep alive seemed nice enough.
Heavyset and tall he'd smiled at her, shaking her slim hand with his meaty one. “Glad to meet you,” he'd said, his Texas accent so thick that Sydney thought he might be faking it. But as the days passed and she'd never heard it slip, Sydney started to think that the man was for real. A genuine friendly fellow. But really, why would anyone want to kill a guy as nice as Mr. Jackson? It wasn't Sydney's job to question why he was in danger. It was her job to keep him alive while he vacationed, while he and his family enjoyed their cruise down the Amazon.
Sydney gave a small nod of her head and Blue ducked, pinning his ears to his skull and began to forge a new path through the jungle, running adjacent to the one they'd just been walking along. Sydney pushed through behind him, her eyes roaming over the diamonds of light that the thick foliage allowed through.
Blue stopped, raised his nose in the air and sniffed at a scent Sydney could not capture with own inferior human olfactory senses. Then Blue started forward again. Within a few minutes they reached another path. The soft imprint of hiking boots marked the ground. Blue sniffed at the spot, his tail wagging with anticipation. He wanted to go after them but Sydney shook her head. They needed to return to camp, report this to her superior. Removing her phone Sydney took pictures of the imprints, the disturbed vegetation, and then dropped a pin on her GPS so that it would be easy to return to this spot if necessary. Before leaving she placed one of the motion detectors she was carrying on a nearby tree. If the person, who wore very similar size shoes to Sydney Rye, returned they'd have warning.
