Sydney Rye Kindle World-Nemesis by Jennifer Harlow

Sydney Rye Kindle World-Nemesis by Jennifer Harlow

To wrap up the weeks of novellas, we have last, but certainly not least…

Nemesis By Jennifer Harlow

Nemesis-final

Sex traffickers, serial killers, and superheroes…welcome to the world of Galilee Falls, Sydney Rye!

This novella takes place between the events of Inviting Fire and Shadow Harvest. It also takes place after the events in The Galilee Falls Trilogy.

The Joy of Justice

The life of the vigilante is a solitary one. Always in the shadows. No one to talk to, no one to share experiences with. Uncle Charlie might be on the front lines as a detective, but he’s on the right side of that line. He gets paid to put the bad guys away, and according to the law, I am one of said bad guys. Of course if I had superpowers like The Royal Triumvirate or this new one White Knight I’d be considered a hero. Have my own action figure. But an ordinary woman taking justice into her own hands is called a freak. A madwoman. A vigilante. A murderer. Even a terrorist because of my affiliation to the Joyful Justice Vigilant Network. More labels. More identities forced upon me. At least now I’m not completely alone living with them.

I haven’t seen another Joyful Justice member, save for Uncle Charlie, since I left their compound in Costa Rica a few months ago when Uncle Charlie offered our services. Of course he got to stay in Independence while I ran around the jungle learning how to use an M-16, how to build bombs, and even learning a new martial arts form from Merl. I was one of dozens there, each of us touched by evil in some way. Each hoping to make the world a better place. Or at least that’s what we tell ourselves. Few can face the truth. I couldn’t until recently. I couldn’t face every bone I broke, every time a man pissed his pants as I held a knife to his throat, every cry as I carved an “N” into his forehead to let the rest of the world know what he truly is, it fed my soul and helped me to continue on in this cesspool of a world.

Most aren’t there yet. I hope they never are. They’re just citizens, good people in need of help. They contact the website, looking for guidance, when the regular justice institutions fail. Even I’ve given other lost souls guidance in their quest for retribution. I am a veteran at the whole vigilante way of life. It’s been four years since I put on my costume: my red and black cloaked jacket and black jumpsuit, both made from ballistic fiber that’s saved my life more than once, steel-toed boots, dark red wig, white kabuki face paint with red lips, and black harlequin mask. Four years of stalking my prey at Frat houses, brothels, in their seemingly normal homes. I’ve been shot at, stabbed, broken several bones, and learned from every injury, every mistake. I am more than willing to share that knowledge with others, even if their quest for justice ends when their personal wrong gets corrected. This is not the way of life for everyone. Uncle Charlie does more for the network, giving them information only a police officer has access to.

We all must do our part to make this world a better place. I just prefer drawing blood to do it.

More importantly there will be prizes and other goodies. As if the 8 free books you can get through The Sydney Rye Kindle World Readers Group wasn't enough. And this week's author will be in attendance. Give a warm welcome for…

Jennifer Harlow

jen

Welcome Jennifer!

Jennifer Harlow spent her restless childhood fighting with her three brothers and scaring the heck out of herself with horror movies and books. She grew up to earn a degree at the University of Virginia which she put to use as a radio DJ, crisis hotline volunteer, bookseller, lab assistant, wedding coordinator, and government investigator. Currently she calls Atlanta home but that restless itch is ever present. In her free time, she continues to scare the beejepers out of herself watching scary movies and opening her credit card bills. She is the author of the Amazon best-selling F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad, IPPY Award Winning Midnight Magic Mystery series, The Galilee Falls Trilogy, and the steampunk romance Verity Hart Vs The Vampyres.

Please introduce us to you and your body of work.

Where to begin? I've written over ten books, mostly in the urban fantasy genre, focusing on vampires, werewolves, then superheroes. I even won an award along the way. I have a straight psychological thriller coming out later this year with Random House Alibi. I also like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain, but then again, who doesn't?

How did you come to be involved in the SRKW? How do you know Emily?

I met Emily at the American Library Association's annual convention years ago. We got to talking at the Sisters in Crime booth and walked out two hours later friends. We keep in touch, and when this opportunity came up, I was honored she asked me to be a part of the event. I'm just glad she liked my novella Nemesis or I could have lost a friend.

What genre do you write in? Why do you enjoy that genre?

I'm technically a paranormal mystery writer, but I consider myself an urban fantasy and supernatural romance writer. Really my books tend to have elements of fantasy, mystery, thriller, romance, and action blended together. There's something in them for everyone.

Which character or characters do you plan to focus on in your Sydney Rye Kindle World contribution? What drew you to that character?

I picked the big guns, Sydney and Blue with Joyful Justice in the periphery. Strong women with witty mouths on them are sort of my specialty so I knew I could do her justice. And where Sydney goes so does Blue.

Will your contribution to the world include one of your own characters? Please introduce us to them and your own world.

Sydney and Blue will find themselves in the land of superheroes and supervillains from my Galilee Falls trilogy but my heroine from that series, Joanna Fallon, gets to sit this one out. Instead Sydney teams up with Nemesis, a vigilante specializing in terrorizing and killing rapists and abusers. Like Sydney she doesn't have superpowers but they do get some help from White Knight, a character from the original trilogy. I'd say more about him but then I'd be giving away big spoilers from the trilogy.

Is there anything else you’d like Emily’s readers to know?

Here's a little taste from the novella coming out next week. Enjoy…

Sex traffickers, serial killers, and superheroes…welcome to the world of Galilee Falls, Sydney Rye!

Sydney Rye thought she'd wiped out the Cartel responsible for killing her friend Malina, but that was only the beginning. She finds herself in a new city, a city with one of the highest concentrations of superheroes in the world, with a new partner to finish the job and avenge her friend.

Nemesis knows a lot about vengeance. The self-proclaimed goddess of retribution has spent the past four years terrorizing the rapists and abusers of her city into submission. But the life of a vigilante is a lonely one. When the Joyful Justice Network asks her to aid Sydney Rye in breaking up a sex trafficking ring, she leaps at the chance to work with the legend. But Sydney isn't there to make friends. Can the women put aside their differences to wipe the villians off the map once and for all? Maybe with a little help from a White Knight…

JusticeEbook

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” –E. Burke

For Det. Joanna Fallon, it’s damn hard being a police officer in Galilee Falls, a city with the highest concentration of superheroes and villains in the country, and working under the specter of the city’s champion, Justice. It’s even harder watching her best friend, the man she’s secretly in love, with planning to marry another woman while keeping the growing relationship with her boss a secret.

When the city’s vilest supervillain, acid spewing Alkaline, escapes from maximum security prison, and an attack close to home, Joanna must contend with her increasing fear and prejudices while struggling to choose between her soul-mate and her new-found love.

With a coy blend of whimsy and vivid imagination, Justice delivers humor and thrills in an action-packed and edgy blend of comic book cool, fantasy-noir, hard-boiled mystery, and bitter-sweet romance.

Galilee Rising_Ebook

Love in the time of superheroes…

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” -Confucius

The year since Galilee Falls lost its reigning superhero Justice has not been kind to Joanna Fallon. She's lost her best friend, her boyfriend, her badge, even her mind. The city of Galilee Falls hasn't fared much better with supervillain related crime skyrocketing to cataclysmic proportions. Deliverance for the city arrives in the guise of The Royal Triumvirate–King Tempest, Lady Liberty, and Lord Nightingale–who vow to be the heroes the city needs. Salvation for Joanna appears in the brilliant form of Dr. Jem Ambrose, another lost soul in need of saving. But salvation comes with a high price. When Emperor Cain, an old nemesis of The Triumvirate, decides he will stop at nothing to make sure there is no city left to defend, it is up to Joanna to rise not only for her city, for her new love, but for herself as well…

FALLOFHEROES

Show me a hero; and I'll write you a tragedy.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald

Hero and Villain.
Good and Evil.
Love and Hate.

Would that the world were that simple. Nothing is ever simple in a world filled with superheroes and villains. She may not wear a cape or have superpowers, but no one would say Joanna Fallon isn't a hero. At great personal cost she's saved the city of Galilee Falls from two supervillains, but has finally found a measure of peace. But whatever rises often falls, and even the city's champion may not be able to fight the cataclysm about to befall not only her city but the whole of the world…or even want to.

Meet the Kindle World Authors-DelSheree Gladden

SRKW (3)

Hello, all! Before the launch of the Sydney Rye Kindle World I wanted to let you all get to know about the authors contributing to the launch. So every week I’ll be publishing a post with an interview with one of these talented authors. And don’t forget to sign up for The Sydney Rye Kindle World Readers’ Group to Receive 8 free books from some of the most talented authors out there! Now onto the second of these wonders…

DelSheree Gladden!

DelShereeGladden

Welcome DelSheree!

DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn't speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published.

Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist. DelSheree has several bestselling young adult series, including “Invisible” which was part of the USA Today Bestselling box set, “Pandora.” The Date Shark Series is her first contemporary romance series, and her first book in her new adult series, The Ghost Host, was recently released as well.

Please introduce us to you and your body of work.

I’m DelSheree Gladden. No, my name is not French, but a goofy combination of my aunts Delsie and Sheri’s names. It was always too long to fit on those fill-in-the-bubble tests in school, but it made getting my twitter handle and domain name really easy!

One of my favorite YA projects of mine is The Aerling Series, not only because I love the characters, but because it was an awesome experience uploading chapters to Wattpad as I was writing the books and getting instant feedback from readers all over the world.

How did you come to be involved in the SRKW? How do you know Emily?

I met Emily through a great group we’re both a part of, called Bestselling Reads. I host the group’s podcast and Emily came on the podcast to talk about her KISS series and the Sydney Rye series. We had a great time on the podcast and I’m really excited to be part of this world!

What genre do you write in? Why do you enjoy that genre?

I write and read just about anything. I started out writing YA fiction, and have since ventured out into new adult, contemporary romance, mystery, and romantic comedy. My writing topics are just as eclectic and range from myths and obscure legends to MMA fighting styles and portable tattoo setups, all with a little romance mixed in.

Which character or characters do you plan to focus on in your Sydney Rye Kindle World contribution? What drew you to that character?

My novella will focus around Hugh Devry, who readers initially meet in the first Sydney Rye book. What drew me to him was how much he cared about Joy Humbolt, this girl who’s kind of a mess and doesn’t have a lot of direction in her life. It’s not just that he’s her brother’s boyfriend and feels obligated to be nice and supportive. She was part of his family in his eyes. At the end of the first book, he begs her not to disappear on him, and that’s what made me what to write about him.

Will your contribution to the world include one of your own characters? Please introduce us to them and your own world.

In the novella, Hugh will meet a character from a book I’m currently working on, which is still untitled because I am the worst at coming up with titles. It will be the first book in the Eliza Carlisle Mystery Series, and Hugh will run into Eliza while covering for a friend at the culinary school where she’s studying. Lots of mishaps, humor, and mystery will ensue.

Is there anything else you’d like Emily’s readers to know?

For me, one of the best things about being a writer is getting to meet other writers. I’ve met so many great people who have been both friends and mentors. I’ve learned a lot from them and try to do the same in return for writers who are starting out. Aside from the Bestselling Reads podcast where Emily and I met, I also run Write. Publish. Repeat Podcast, which is geared more toward helping writers learn about writing, publishing, and marketing. I love having guests come on and offer their advice as well. So if writers need some advice or have some to share, stop by and check out the podcast!

Invisible Front Cover

Olivia’s best friend is not imaginary. He’s not a ghost, either. And she’s pretty sure he’s not a hallucination. He’s just Mason.

He is, however, invisible.

When Olivia spotted the crying little boy on her front porch at five years old, she had no idea she was the only one who could see him. Twelve years later when new-girl Robin bumps into the both of them and introduces herself to Mason, they are both stunned.

Mason couldn’t be more pleased that someone else can see him. Olivia, on the other hand, isn’t jumping at the chance to welcome Robin into their circle. Jealousy may have something to do with that, but honest fear that Robin’s presence will put Mason in danger is soon validated when a strange black car shows up outside Olivia’s house.
The race to find out what Robin knows in time to protect Mason from whatever threats are coming becomes Olivia’s only focus.

Meet The Kindle World Authors-Julie Gilbert

SRKW (3)

Hello, all! Before the launch of the Sydney Rye Kindle World I wanted to let you all get to know about the authors contributing to the launch. So every week I'll be publishing a post with an interview with one of these talented authors. And don't forget to sign up for The Sydney Rye Kindle World Readers' Group to Receive 8 free books from some of the most talented authors out there! Now onto the first of these wonders…

Julie Gilbert!

Julie Gilbert 2013 (1 of 25)

Welcome Julie!

Julie is a writer, a chemistry teacher, a reviewer, a Star Wars fan, and a tea/coffee drinker. She also sells Legos for a friend. Over the past year, she's had the chance to build more sets than she's ever done in my entire life. (It’s awesome.) She lives in New Jersey.

Please introduce us to you and your body of work.

Hi. My name is Julie C. Gilbert. I’m a chemistry teacher by day and a fiction writer by night, weekend, and random time I can steal. I have books in several genres. Devya’s Children focuses on genetically altered children and their Gifts and general life struggles. Heartfelt Cases follows a pair of FBI agents and 3 of their tough, personal cases. Defining Moments is a series of novellas set in Toby Neal’s Lei Crime series. The first one features a young Michael Stevens and answers the question of why he’d want to become a cop. The next three feature FBI Special Agent Marcella Scott and 3 of her crazy cases. I also have unpublished fantasy and science fiction works.

How did you come to be involved in the SRKW? How do you know Emily?

Emily and I were both launch authors for the Lei Crime Kindle World. At the time, all the launch authors were trying to help each other as much as possible. I found I liked playing with the back cover copies, so I was helping to shape those for anybody who asked. Later, Emily asked if I’d look over one for her Sydney Rye series. Months later, she asked if I’d like to help launch the Sydney Rye Kindle World. Of course, I said “yes,” because I was super impressed with how awesome her Lei Crime KW story turned out.

What genre do you write in? Why do you enjoy that genre?

Devya’s Children is Young Adult Science Fiction. Heartfelt Cases is Christian Mystery. The Defining Moments series is either Mystery/Suspense or Mystery/ Thriller.

I love that with any sort of science fiction you can do just about anything as long as it’s plausible. This series allows me to explore the possibilities yet also focus on the characters. I enjoy being able to deal with real world issues in my own way. I guess I’m a wee bit of a control freak that way.

Mysteries are always fun to put together. A lot of my early mysteries concentrated on kidnapping. I’m not entirely sure where the obsession came from, but I find people’s motivations for doing desperate things fascinating.
I’m just starting to explore thriller as a genre. It’s still cool, but I tend to gravitate toward personal problems rather than high stakes mental games.

Fantasy’s fun too for escapism purposes. It’s nice to be able to occasionally decapitate a zombie here and there. Shapeshifters are also intriguing. So, of course, both make it into my version of fantasy.

Which character or characters do you plan to focus on in your Sydney Rye Kindle World contribution? What drew you to that character?

I think I’ll probably focus on Sydney Rye herself. Not sure when the story will be set, but I like the transformation profess of this normal woman into a bad-guy whooping vigilante we get later in the series.

Will your contribution to the world include one of your own characters? Please introduce us to them and your own world.

Yes. I’d like you to meet Nadia Ayers. See the cover for Nadia’s Tears for a picture reference. The earlier Kindle Worlds I’ve been involved with didn’t have the luxury of integrating characters from my own works, so this should be interesting.

Nadia is a minder, which means her brain grows and develops very quickly. Her Gift also includes telepathy. She’s surprisingly a pretty sweet and normal teenager given the lot she’s been dealt.

Devya’s Children the series focuses on a cast of about 8 genetically altered children who have different Gifts. Jillian can shape dreams, Malia can manipulate emotions, and Varick’s been trained and augmented to be the perfect soldier. Each book focuses on a different child and their Gifts.

Because of her personal situation, Nadia’s very conscious of human trafficking and modern day slavery. This is a passion she shares with Sydney Rye. I imagine they’d get along fabulously.

Is there anything else you’d like Emily’s readers to know?

Fun fact: Ashlynn’s Dreams will soon be available in Chinese, but I definitely won’t be able to read it. I look forward to co-mingling the Devya’s Children characters and the Sydney Rye universe. Here’s to adventure.

51aWSTIfDYL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

Twelve-year-old Jillian Blairington is just an ordinary girl — bright, brave, and sometimes a bit too headstrong for her own good. She never thought she was particularly special or different than anybody else.

She was wrong.

Everything changes the day she and her babysitter, Danielle, are kidnapped and taken to a secret scientific facility. There Jillian learns she has a new name, Ashlynn, and a strange connection to the other children at the lab. They each have powerful abilities, Gifts that Jillian doesn’t quite understand. As if that wasn’t enough to absorb, Jillian discovers she has a Gift of her own — the power to enter other people’s dreams.

Jillian’s task seems simple enough: the scientists want her to use her ability to find another Gifted child who has disappeared. But the longer Jillian stays in the facility, the more she realizes that nothing is as it seems … and everybody has secrets. Besides, the boy's life is not the only one at stake. The scientists will stop at nothing to force Jillian's cooperation, even if that means threatening Danielle.

Jillian knows they have to get free. But after all they’ve seen, will they ever truly escape?

ashland1

Jillian must enter Nadia's dreams to wake her from a mysterious coma. In Nadia's dreams, Jillian meets several versions of her sister, including the elegant Queen Elena, fierce Naidine, and heartbroken Nadie. Meanwhile, Danielle must save her friend Christy from making choices that could get them both killed.

Six Kiss and The Kiss Omnibus Out Now

Six Kiss is now live!

My name is Darling, and I am the Daughter of Lilith.

I hold the answer to end the zombie apocalypses that plagues the Universe. I am the last hope to save the human race. But first I have to unlock the spell that rises the dead.

Bringing my allies together to end the zombies as forces maneuver to stop me is my number one concern. But that means I have to play nice with a group of warlocks who won’t listen to reason.

Throw in some new powers I can hardly control, a hunger that can only be sated in one way, and an immortal being who wants to control my every move and I’ve got more problems than I can handle on my own.

Good thing I have an amazing team.
Even if they are dead.

Here's an Excerpt for you all to enjoy…

I did not sleep well that night. Dreams haunted me. Darling's voice whispering in my ear. I couldn't make out what she said and when I asked all I heard was her laughter. I thought the vacuum she'd told me you entered to travel between the Dimensions was pulling at me, disintegrating my body. When I woke the sun was just at the horizon, the sky outside my window heather grey. I pushed the curtain aside, looking through the thick glass at the walls surrounding the compound. The cement was almost the same color as the sky. I knew that beyond it the zombies roamed, trying everything to breach our defenses. Hungry for only one thing.

I dressed quickly in black slacks and a pale blue blouse buttoned all the way to the top, determined today to be immune to Darling's charm. I pulled my hair back into a tight bun and washed my face, scrubbing at the skin until it glowed red. I still didn't feel fully awake. Today was my last chance with her. I had to get Darling to trust me. Was that even it though? It wasn't that she needed to trust me. It was that she needed to want to save me. I felt tears prick at my eyes.

Fear, a constant aching force, rose in my throat, quickening my heart beat. I knew that she wanted to save the Universe. She'd said as much many times. So why did she hold back the answers that she did have? Darling didn't think of time in the same way that I did. But wasn't it pressing down on all of us, I thought with one last glance out the window at the wall.

When I arrived in the interrogation room, Darling was waiting for me. The guard opened the door for me and I stopped short when I saw her sitting there. She was leaning back in the chair, its front legs off the ground, her feet propped on the table. Her clothing was the same as every other day: skin tight black leather pants and a ribbed white tank top. Her hair was down today, black, thick, and wavy, it fell over her exposed shoulders.

“Good morning,” she said with a smile that took my breath away.

Recovering I crossed to my chair, clearing my throat. “Good morning,” I said. “I hope you weren't waiting long.”

“Not at all,” Darling said, looking over at the guard. “We found a way to amuse ourselves,” she smiled.

I glanced at the guard. His face was bright red, embarrassed. Had she fed from him? It didn't matter, I decided, opening my notebook. I reread my notes, even though I'd basically memorized them. “Yesterday you ended your story just as Charity and you had returned to Suki's world.” I looked up at her, but did not make eye contact, concentrating instead on her forehead.

“Yes,” Darling said, taking down her feet and leaning toward me, her smell, the hint of sugar and spice and everything nice, enveloped me. “It was quite a reentry.”
